R. W. Alley was born in 1955 and lives in Rhode Island. He did not go to art school, but rather has an art history degree from Haverford College outside of Philadelphia. After graduating, he worked for four years as an artist/art director at several greeting card companies, including Hallmark Cards. Since 1984 he has worked as a freelance illustrator.
Alley published his first children's book in 1981. Since then, he has illustrated over one hundred books. Most notably, since 1998, he has illustrated the 'Paddington Bear' books. Although he had always wanted to work in the comic panel format, it wasn't until 2008 that his first comic album was published by Roaring Book Press, 'There's A Wolf At The Door', which was written by his wife Zoë Alley. Robert and Zoe Alley's second comic book came in 2010, 'There's a Princess in the Palace' was also published by Roaring Brook Press.
